The Economy of Wellness: Is it accessible?

The Wellness industry has grown rapidly in recent years, with an estimated value of $4.5 trillion globally (around R1,713 Trillion). The focus on mental and physical health, wellness and self-care has become increasingly important for many people, leading to the growth of a vast industry encompassing everything from fitness and nutrition to mindfulness and beauty.

But the question remains, is the Wellness industry accessible and inclusive to all?

Wellness in a South African context

In South Africa, the situation is particularly complex as the country continues to face record levels of poverty, unemployment and inequality, with millions of people living below the poverty line and unable to afford basic necessities, let alone access to wellness and self-care.

But despite these challenges, a growing number of female entrepreneurs in South Africa are making waves in the Wellness industry. These women are breaking down barriers and creating innovative, affordable and accessible products and services that cater to the unique needs of their communities.

However, there is still much work to be done to ensure that the Wellness industry is truly inclusive and accessible to all. One key area is the lack of diversity in the industry, with women of colour often facing significant barriers in starting their own businesses and accessing funding.

Creating inclusivity and accessibility in the Wellness industry

In order to create a more inclusive and accessible Wellness industry, it is essential to address these challenges and support female entrepreneurs in developing their businesses. The Xena community is actively moving the needle with our free, specially curated library of valuable business resources, as well as networking opportunities and free live events to help local female founders expand their knowledge and skill set and gain insight into how they can scale their businesses.

Overcoming cultural and societal bias

Another important step is to recognise and address the cultural and societal biases that exist within the Wellness industry. Many people still view wellness as a luxury for the wealthy, rather than a basic human right. This perception needs to change, and the industry must work to make wellness accessible and affordable for everyone, regardless of socioeconomic status.

At Xena, we’re exploring all things Biohacking during the month of February, as well as how global trends in Business and Wellness can be translated into a local context for female founders.
