Goal-Setting 101: Techniques Every Founder Should Know

Setting practical, effective goals is the foundation upon which successful fempires are built. And let’s face it ladies, we’re all different, so tailoring your goal-setting techniques to suit your unique needs is key! Here are some great strategies to consider.

  1. SMART Goals:
By now, you would have likely heard about SMART goals. They stand for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound, and are designed to give you clearer direction. For instance, instead of aiming to “increase profits,” a SMART goal would be “increase profits by 10% over the next quarter.”
  2. HARD Goals:
Goals should resonate with you emotionally and challenge you. Objectives that are HARD (Heartfelt, Animated, Required, and Difficult) drive genuine passion and dedication. Set goals that make you feel excited about the journey and the end result!
  3. WOOP Goals:
If you’re someone who likes more of a structured approach, consider setting WOOP goals.  WOOP stands for Wish, Outcome, Obstacles, and Plan. Begin with a passionate wish, envision the best outcome, anticipate obstacles, and devise a plan to navigate them. This technique is designed to ensure thorough preparation.
  4. OKR Goals:
If you’ve been on Xena for a while, you’ll know that we love ourselves some OKR goals. More common in businesses, OKR goals set an Objective and identify the Key Results needed to achieve it. This dual focus keeps both the bigger picture and the finer details in perspective.
  5. Micro Goals:
If you’re someone who tends to get overwhelmed, micro goals could be a great introduction into goal-setting. They decompose larger goals into smaller, actionable tasks, allow for regular progress checks and make sizable aspirations more manageable. For example, a goal to launch a new product can have micro goals like “complete prototype by month-end.”
  6. Backward Goals:
When it comes to backwards goals, the aim is to visualise the end result and then work backwards to identify the steps to get there. This approach can often unveil essential milestones that might be overlooked.
  7. Values-based Goals:
Another important technique is to anchor your objectives in your core values. This will ensure alignment between what you aim for and what you stand for, boosting intrinsic motivation.
  8. Locke and Latham’s Five Principles:
Latham’s Five Principles are a great addition to your goal-setting toolkit. These principles emphasise:
    • Aiming for Clear, Defined Objectives: Avoid vague aspirations and focus on clear-cut targets, such as “Increase customer engagement by 15%.”
    • Setting Challenging Goals: Push your boundaries; these goals motivate and inspire greater effort, driving peak performance.
    • Committing Wholeheartedly: Once a goal is set, dive in fully. Your commitment level directly impacts the results.
    • Actively Seeking Feedback: Continuous feedback keeps you informed about your progress and areas of improvement. For instance, if you’re aiming to enhance team productivity, periodic reviews can provide insights into which strategies are working and which aren’t.
    • Matching Complexity with Skill Level: Ensure the challenge of the goal complements your current skills. If you’re new to digital marketing, for instance, aim for mastering one platform before branching out to others.
  1. The Six W’s:
Feeling stuck as to how you’ll approach a big goal? Ask yourself the Six W’s—Who, What, When, Where, Why, and Which, These questions will provide depth to your objectives, turning vague ambitions into detailed plans.
  2. The PACT Method:
Tailored for longer visions, the PACT Method stands for Purposeful (having a clear reason), Actionable (broken into tasks), Continuous (ensuring daily progress), and Trackable (measurable).

By integrating these techniques, you’re not just setting goals; you’re crafting a resilient, adaptable, and actionable roadmap for fempreneur success! Remember ladies, goal-setting isn’t about setting rigid “rules” but about finding the strategies that resonate most deeply with you and your dreams!
